I had a similar experience with the sport I play. I injured my shoulder and couldn't even raise my arm above my head for 2 months without a lot of pain. I had to stop working out and finally went to the doctor and found out it was not a tear but tendonosis of the supraspinadus. My wife is a PT and put me on shoulder strength training and my shoulder is far stronger than it was. Sure I lost 1 month of p90x and a second month that I was going to do an Asylum hybrid but in the end my shoulder is much stronger and I am better off as I should not have shoulder problems anymore! I now know how to take proper care of my shoulder capsule and hopefully I will be able to play as long as my knees last =).
